Musing Mondays: Sick Bed

Here's this week's Musing Mondays, brought to us by Rebecca at One More Page. To read more about the meme and to see other answers, click on through to her blog.

How does your being sick (or injured) affect your reading? Do you read more? Less? Do you pick out a different book than you had already planned? Do you have a "comfort book" that makes you feel better?

When I don't feel well, I want a light and easy read. I might turn to cozy mysteries or YA fantasies. I want a book that won't tax my foggy brain and that can hold up to intermittent napping.

Last time I was really sick (about a year ago) I read Irish Country Doctor by Patrick Taylor and started Murder in the Museum by Simon Brett.

I'm not sick that often, and I have to be close to death before I shirk my wifely and motherly duties! And when I am that down and out, I usually am lucky to be able to focus on something on TV, let alone read. Luckily, this does not happen but once every few years. I am not happy when I'm not reading!

I'm not sick that often, either (knock on wood), but it would depend on how sick I am - sometimes I just can't read at all.

I haven't really considered this before. I think I probably am most likely to read whatever I am already in the middle of, if I feel up to reading. If I am not, I usually end up sleeping and watching DVDs.

I soooo look to comfort reads when I'm sick....things like gothic romances, etc. They're like chicken soup in my book.

Hi Beth! Those books sound like perfect "sick" reads!

As I suffer from chronic fatigue, I am always ´ill´, work part-time and read quite a lot, but of course I have days where I do not function at all. On those I watch stupid TV series, read weeklies or reread cosy crime fiction.

I would stay with what I've been reading unless it's like something as demanding as a Dostoevsky or Woolf.

I'm with you on that!

I do the same thing. Since I'm more likely to be irritable when sick, I also have less tolerance for boring or silly books. I want something that will really capture my attention and take my mind off my discomfort.

I still read when I'm sick, unless the medicine knocks me off! Then again, I won't choose a heavy literary book which needs my full concentration, LOL.
