BBAW: Spotlight Meme and Giveaway

Welcome to BBAW!! Here's today's meme:

The shortlists for the awards were announced on Monday, September 7. The first day of BBAW, Monday September 14, we encourage you to write a post thanking and spotlighting your favorite blogs that didn’t make the shortlists.

Like most of you, I have hundreds of blogs in my blogroll and reader combined. So I can't possibly spotlight every blog that visit on a regular basis. Instead I'm going to introduce you to three blogs that you should put in your reader.

Devourer of Books

Category: Most Concise. "This blog gets its point across clearly and efficiently—it tells you just what you need to know."

My thoughts: I appreciate that Jen gets right to the point, telling us exactly what she likes and doesn't like about a book. I always enjoy the personal touch she adds to her reviews.

Sample Reviews: Belong to Me by Maria de los Santos, Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr, The Marriage Bureau for Rich People by Farahad Zama

Medieval Bookworm

Category: Best History/Historical Fiction Blog. "This blog features the best reviews and specialized content on books about a time gone by."

My Thoughts: Not only is Meghan a specialist in medieval history (she's minutes away from earning her master's degree) but she is well read and articulate in history in general. She is my go-to person for a well-rounded opinion in this genre.

Sample reviews: King's Fool by Margaret Campbell Barnes, Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran, The Last Witch of Langenburg by Thomas Robisheaux

Farm Lane Books

Category: Best Literary Fiction Blog. "This blog covers primarily literary fiction. The reviews are of a high caliber and get you to think on some of the deeper issues that literary fiction brings up."

My Thoughts: To me, Jackie is the literary fiction queen. I know of no one else who sets out to read so many award-winning and -nominated books. And the good news is that she is not won over by the awards committees; she has her own well-thought-out opinions and isn't afraid to tell us.

Sample Reviews: Comfort of Strangers by Ian McEwan, Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Stroud, The Invisible Mountain by Carolina De Robertis

Today's Giveaway (THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED)

I have a giveaway every day this week. To enter for this handmade (by me) bobblin lace bookmark all you have to do is leave a comment here telling me (1) your email address and (2) which of the books mentioned in this post you'd like to read and why. If your comment is missing this information, I can't count your entry. This giveaway is open all week and I'll pick a winner (via random.org) on Saturday, September 19 soon after I turn on my computer. To see the bookmark much enlarged, click on the image.

Hello Beth

The lace bookmark looks great- how clever you are to make it - I remember my grandmother doing fine lace work like that with lots of bead things attached to ends of thread.
My email address is kasmith9 at esc.net.au

Thanks for your reviews too. I'm convinced I need to look for Olive Kitteridge.

Melody 9/14/09, 6:35 AM

I've a hard time writing this post because I've too many blogs to list!

Thanks for this post, Beth! I'm a follower of those blogs you highlighted except Medieval Bookworm as it's a new-to-me blog. I'll have to check out this blog!

I'd love to read Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr because I'm a huge fan of fantasy and I've heard a lot of good reviews on this series!

Meghan 9/14/09, 6:50 AM

I am so amazed that I'm one of your three!! Thank you so much! I'm running out of words to say here, but I'm astonished that I come across as articulate in history. I always feel like I'm bumbling around. Anyway, thank you!

And since I am dying to win the lace bookmark, I'd love to read Olive Kitteridge. It's been on my wishlist since I saw it on LT early reviewers. My email address is meghankk at gmail dot com.

gautami tripathy 9/14/09, 6:54 AM

I got all three on my reader and enjoy reading them daily!

BBAW: My very own shortlist

Unknown 9/14/09, 8:19 AM

Thank you so much for your kind words! I am so flattered that you picked me. I'm a bit embarrassed that you picked my Comfort of Strangers review - I try to be a little bit nicer in my reviews now!

I am very impressed by your book mark - it is beautiful!

I've had Wicked Lovely on my wishlist ever since I saw your review, so that has to be on the top of the list! You made the audio version sound so appealing - I'm still on the lookout for a copy!

LOL - you're totally right, we did use very similar wording for Meghan's blog! I didn't even think of Jen for Most Concise, but you're totally right! And I need to add Farmlane Books to my reader.

I really want to read Olive Kitteridge because I've heard so many amazing things about it and Cleopatra's Daughter because I heart Michelle Moran.

I think the two books I'd most like to read are The Marriage Bureau for Rich People and King's Fool.
That bookmark is beautiful! I would love to make some myself. Where would I find a pattern?
I'd love to be entered in your draw.
Thanks!

I want to read Olive Kitteridge for many reasons, among them the fact that it's a novel in short stories.

And I want to read the Marriage Bureau for Rich People because it's set in India.

Wanda: that particular pattern comes from a book I picked up in The Netherlands a few years ago. Here's website for patterns and supplies for bobblin lace: http://www.vansciverbobbinlace.com/

Margot at Joyfully Retired 9/14/09, 10:03 AM

I like your list. I'm a big fan of Farm Lane Books and her friendly style of reviewing.

I would like to be entered in your contest just for your bookmark alone. The picture shows some amazing lacework that I'd love to see up close. If my name turns out to be the winner and you really want me to take a book as well, then I'll add Belong to Me to my list.

Jen - Devourer of Books 9/14/09, 10:04 AM

I'm SOOO flattered to be one of your three! And in great company as well. Also, I SOOOO want to win your lace bookmark (I think I should get extra points in the giveaway because this week sucks with leaving Daniel and going back to work).

I want to read "The Last Witch of Langenburg" because both Meghan and Jennifer of Literate Housewife read it sometime ago (in Spring, I think), and I've been dying to read it ever since, but just haven't gotten around to it.

Sandy Nawrot 9/14/09, 10:24 AM

Excellent post! I would have expected nothing less! I do not follow Medieval Bookworm, but she seriously has been highlighted in at least have of the blogs I follow! Need to get on the stick with that one! As far as books I REALLY want to read that you mentioned, that would be Olive Kitteridge. I'm going to get to it...some day! Love the bookmark! It would be perfect for my collection! rnawrot at cfl dot rr dot com

What a gorgeous bookmark! Please enter me to win it. I want to read all 3 of the books listed with Devourer of Books-- Belong to Me, Wicked Lovely and The Marriage Bureau for Rich People.

Great blog choices-- I read Devourer of Books and Medieval Bookworm, and need to add Farm Lane Books, since I follow her on Twitter and enjoy her there!

Jo 9/14/09, 1:06 PM

I'd like to enter please!

Email: joannestapley[at]googlemail[dot]com

I'd like to read The Last Witch of Langenburg, because I love anything to do with witches and magic!

Dawn @ sheIsTooFondOfBooks 9/14/09, 1:19 PM

I like the format of your spotlight post, with links direct to sample reviews (talk about concise, you've got it down in this one!)

These 3 book bloggers are on my daily "must read" list as well.

As for that bookmark giveaway ... I'll tell you that I want to read THE MARRIAGE BUREAU FOR RICH PEOPLE because aside from Jen's review at Devouer of Books, I've read another positive one at The Boston Bibliophile, and (ahem), it's actually in my TBR and needs to be bumped up.

I would love to enter to win a piece of your handiwork!

All three of your picks are in my Google Reader too, and Devourer of Books was on my "personal shortlist" as well.

Since I already have it somewhere in TBR Purgatory, I'll pick Olive Kitteridge as the book I'd like to read.

Great list, Beth. These are all terrific blogs.

Carrie K. 9/14/09, 3:59 PM

That bookmark is absolutely gorgeous!

I really want to read Wicked Lovely. My sister brought me her copies of the entire trilogy when she was here visiting this summer, but I've had too many ARC and review commitments to get to it, yet.

Great selections! Great minds think alike. LOL! I follow Farm Lane Books on Twitter. I need to add her to my Google Reader fast!

I think your bookmark is absolutely lovely! I don't think I would have the patience to do that kind of detailed work. It's so lovely, though. I am really hoping to mail out the September bookmarks out this week. :)

I've read Belong to Me and The Last Witch of Langenburg. Both were really good. I have Olive Kitteridge on my MP3 player and have had a hard time getting into it. I need to push through because it sounds wonderful. I also HAVE to read King's Fool and Cleopatra's Daughter.

Jenners 9/14/09, 7:29 PM

Great choices!!! I think the world of Farm Lane Books -- she reads books that intimidate me but makes me feel I could handle them.

I love how you listed links to their posts! Thanks!

Belle 9/14/09, 8:49 PM

Love the format of your post! That bookmark looks lovely. Hmmm, what book would I like to read? Probably The Marriage Bureau for Rich People because I've heard so many good things about it.

Memory 9/14/09, 9:24 PM

Great list, and beautiful bookmark! Of all the books you linked to, I'm most looking forward to CLEOPATRA'S DAUGHTER, largely because of all the great things Meghan has had to say about Michelle Moran and her books.

It's so hard to choose, but you have made some fabulous choices! I love them all.

Literary Feline 9/15/09, 12:14 AM

I love how you wrote up your post for today, Beth! It's so hard to narrow down the blogs you want to highlight, isn't it? You've definitely picked some wonderful blogs.

Olive Ketteridge is sitting in my TBR collection now. The whole idea of reading a novel set in short story format is intriguing. I've heard such great things about it. Cleopatra's Daughter is coming up soon in my immediate TBR pile. I'm in the mood for historical fiction. Oh and Wicked Lovely and Belong to Me are both books I am anxious to read. Oh, just give me a year of paid vacation from work and I'll spend all my time reading, please! Well, mostly. I'll have to blog too.

I would love to enter the giveaway!
