Fall Read-a-Thon: What's a Gal to Read?

This time next week I'm going to be participating in Dewey's 24-Hour Read-a-Thon. In case you don't know, it's a day-long, worldwide event in which participants do nothing but read and blog and tweet about their reading. Some people opt to cheer the readers on, and some people do a bit of both.

Last time, I was a cheerleader; this time I want to read as well as cheer.

I thought I share my stacks of possible Read-a-thon books. I'll be lucky to get three books read, but here's what I'm going to pick from (click on photo to enlarge):

Left (top to bottom): The Magykal Papers is a wonderful supplement to the Septimus Heap middle-reader fantasy series that I found at the library. Laura Rider's Masterpiece is contemporary fiction. A Whole Nother Story is another middle reader book. The Devouring and Oathbreaker are young adult fantasy. Fables 1, Fables 2, and Blankets are all graphic novels. The Georges and the Jewels is a Jane Smiley book for middle readers. Elynia is a novel in lyric. Sword of Fire and Ice is graphic novel. Vampire Diaries and Mr. Darcy, Vampyre look fun. And Levianthan was irresistible.

Middle (top to bottom): Sadly, I haven't yet read Julie and Julia; Stitches is a graphic memoir. Liar, Invisible I, Deadly Little Secret, Five Minutes More, and Breathless are all young adult. The Chocolate Run is women's lit. The Tear Collector and The Devil's Kiss both sound spooky. The Warrior Heir is the first in a fantasy series.

Right side (top to bottom): The first two are young adult novels by different authors and different publishers: Demon Princess and Demon King. The Xibalba Murders is a mystery. Kitty and the Midnight Hour is an urban fantasy. I've been dying to read The Uglies, so this might be my chance. Valeria's Last Stand and Fallen are fantasies of sorts. The Texicans is a western; Century and Lady Macbeth's Daughter are more young adult. Winter in Thrush Green is a British novel; Ice Land is kind of historical fiction and fantasy (I think). And at the bottom is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I have some eBooks and audiobooks lined up as well!! If nothing else, I'll be able to find something to suit my mood.

Wow. You must be a MUCH faster reader than I am! :) Even with 24 un-interrupted hours, I wouldn't make it through more than three or four titles. I'm impressed!

inthedailies: LOL! As I said at the top of the post, I'll be lucky to get through three books. These are just the ones I've set aside to pick from.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with a ridiculous pile! I've seen Uglies on lots of lists, although so many book bloggers have recommended it, I'm not surprised. I did not love Laura Rider's Masterpiece, but it's a good one to knock out in one sitting. I loved Julie and Julia (and can't wait for Cleaving to come out in December). I have an ARC of Ice Land I should read soon too. Enjoy!

I only recognize a handful of these titles- you are so much more up to date than me! I vote for picking the thinnest books so you get a sense of satsifaction/completion throughout the 24 hours by finishing.

Wow. A lot to read. I guess Random.org may come in handy. I will post mine on Thurs.

Love your stack. The Uglies and a Fables novel, Peter and Max, are on my read-a-thon pile.Seeing Blankets and Stitches in your piles makes me want to add it to my own.

Lisa 10/17/09, 11:14 AM

Still on the fence about participating but if I do, I think I'll have a pile of book like this ready. If I have to stay awake for 24 hours, I'd better have plenty to choose from.

Stacy 10/17/09, 11:16 AM

So many to choose from and so many titles that are new to me. So excited it is only a week away. Happy reading!

Robin M 10/17/09, 11:53 AM

Neat stack of books to choose from. I'm going to be a cheerleader this year. We have a day long boy scout event that day. Have fun reading and I'll be there to cheer you on.

Wendy 10/17/09, 11:55 AM

Great line-up of possibilities there, Beth! I love the wind-up to the event where everyone is starting to pick out their books :) Thanks for sharing!

Looks like you'll have a lot to choose from!

Jen - Devourer of Books 10/17/09, 12:29 PM

I'm glad to see you have even MORE books on your stack than I do, makes me feel less ridiculous. I will once again say that I think "Uglies" is a great Readathon book.

kay - Infinite Shelf 10/17/09, 12:31 PM

Wow, that's a great stack! I have no doubt that you'll find something great to read among those. Have fun during the readathon!

Julie P. 10/17/09, 12:40 PM

You're aiming high! I wish you the best of luck!

Alea 10/17/09, 2:45 PM

Demon Princess was a lot of fun and I can't wait to read Liar myself!

Belle 10/17/09, 3:37 PM

You've definitely got something to suit every mood! I'll be here cheering you on. And now I've added another book to my wish list: The Xibalba Murders looks good!

Sandy Nawrot 10/17/09, 5:30 PM

I think it is important to have something for every mood...you just never know! I'm so envious! I will be thinking of you all next week, reading to your heart's content!

Louise 10/17/09, 5:53 PM

I have actually signed up for the read-a-thon, but first I signed up as a reader, then I realized that I would rather sign up as a cheerleader and then I could not figure out how to remove myself from the first sign-up. And now I am just confused ;-) I had a look at that series in which Uglies belong, and I think you should read that one - I am curious to know how you like it and if you can recommend it afterwards :-)

Alexia561 10/17/09, 7:16 PM

Great selection of books! What a good idea to have several different books available so you can grab whatever suits your current mood. Think I'll just cheer everyone on this year, as I work on Sundays. Have fun!

Dawn @ sheIsTooFondOfBooks 10/17/09, 10:09 PM

Great variety! You're smart to include some graphics for when you need a break from intense reading, and audios for when you need to get up and move!

Have fun! I'll pop in and cheer when I can.

bermudaonion 10/17/09, 10:10 PM

You're well prepared! I think we must be a lot alike. I'll go away for two days and take 5 or 6 books with me.

Joy Renee 10/17/09, 10:52 PM

very eclectic selection and i see many new-to-me titles that sound intriguing like Lady MacBeth's Daughter. several like Julie and Julia are on my wishlist.

My niece loaned me Uglies and its two sequels a couple years ago and i loved them. I hear there is a fourth one out now.

I have a shelf full of YA loaned by my niece which i didn't include in the list i posted since i was focused on the library books. they will all be in my pool that day as well as several review copies i've received. i also have several audio and ebooks and more library books on order.

Carrie K. 10/17/09, 11:08 PM

What a wonderful pile to choose from! I really want to read Ice Land after reading Swapna's review.

bookmagic 10/17/09, 11:13 PM

I just started Julie and Julia and I am really enjoying it. Though it makes me hungry. I just realized the majority of my readathon books are on my Kindle. So I have almost no readathon pile to take a picture of.

Anonymous,  10/18/09, 3:06 AM

Ooooh, that sounds like a wonderful pile! And Fables! They'll make a lovely Read-a-Thon read!

I've only heard of some of these books, sadly. Oh, no wait. Now I'm being silly. I read those two Fables volumes. (Sorry, it's early...)

It looks like a fantastic pile of choices! ^-^ (And I admire you choice to sign up as both a cheerleader and a reader! Good luck!)

Rebecca Johnson 10/18/09, 6:09 AM

I'm just happy to see someone with a bigger pile than mine :)

Katrina 10/18/09, 6:15 AM

I have a read a few of those, so I loved and some I really didn't. I can't wait to see you Saturday!

Dorte H 10/18/09, 12:05 PM

I wonder: do you plan to read Lady Macbeth´s Daughter once or twice? ;)

Memory 10/18/09, 2:27 PM

Wow, that's an awesome pool! So many good books! I've only read a couple of them, but I've heard scads of good things about most of your pile.

Anonymous,  10/18/09, 2:43 PM

That's quite the pile! Good luck!!

Michelle 10/18/09, 5:11 PM

Holy smokes! That is one heck of a pile you've got going on there. You're right you should be able to find something that suits your desires at the moment for sure.

I've still got to get my choices together but, like you, I suspect I'll be very lucky to read a couple. I'm a super slow reader and I don't know that I'll be able to do much more than two and that depends on the length of what I pick up.

Good luck to you :)

Jenners 10/18/09, 8:47 PM

I think you have something for every possible mood you might have! And I have to say thank you as I've been looking for an X book for the A to Z Challenge and "The Xibalba Murders" caught my eye. Going to check it out!!!

Kailana 10/18/09, 11:08 PM

That's a lot of books! Good luck with that!

Melody 10/18/09, 11:24 PM

Wow, that's a lot of books! I won't be participating but I'll be cheering you guys on in spirit! :)

Margot 10/19/09, 1:14 AM

When I think 24 hours to just read, it seems like I should be able to read a huge list of books. But in reality, three books completed will be a great accomplishment. Good luck and have fun.

Anonymous,  10/19/09, 4:28 PM

I've actually read a couple of those! I need to get my read-a-thon post up.

Alice 10/20/09, 2:46 AM

So many books! Good luck for your challenge!

Serena 10/20/09, 1:59 PM

Holy cow...good luck with that stack! At least you have a variety to choose from.

Dana 10/20/09, 10:45 PM

ooh, what a great list!

Ella 10/21/09, 1:14 AM

Hey Beth,

like you i will also cheer and read this year. :)

my, you have such a pile, but the Magykal Papers is what I want most, lol.

Good luck to both of us!

Happy Reading!!

Meghan 10/21/09, 9:45 AM

Those are some great piles! You have plenty of choice even if you're not going to read more than 3. I'm glad you're able to read this time!

S. Krishna 10/21/09, 10:08 AM

I think that having options and a lot of books to choose from is key.

Anonymous,  10/21/09, 11:56 AM

LOL I hope you won't take too long browsing your pile and decide on a book! I see you've piled up a lot of spooky books and romance?

Ronnica 10/21/09, 2:52 PM

You've got a lot! I have only read Fables 1, and didn't care for it too much. Still, it'll be a nice breather from some of the other books.

Enjoy!

Heidenkind 10/28/09, 11:28 PM

Hoooooooly cow, that's a lot of books.
